African Green Monkeys (AGM) Quarantine Colony Census: Antiparasitic Treatment and Husbandry

V-SP-24-0014 African Green Monkeys (AGM) Quarantine Colony Census Antiparasitic Treatment and Husbandry

This study highlights the antiparasitic treatments and husbandry practices used in a large colony of St. Kitts-origin African green monkeys (AGMs). As AGMs become increasingly valuable in preclinical safety assessments, effective parasite management is crucial for maintaining their health and suitability as a test system.

Using a combination of antiparasitic treatments, including ivermectin, albendazole, and praziquantel, this study successfully eliminated nematode infections. The treatment protocol significantly reduced parasite reinfections in AGMs in conjunction with thorough husbandry interventions like daily cage sanitation and careful food handling.

With a 96.9% success rate in clearing nematode infections post-treatment, this study confirms the effectiveness of the combined therapeutic and husbandry approach. The findings highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and retreatment to ensure the health and well-being of AGMs during preclinical studies.
